An excellent documentary except for one thing. I whole heartily agree with the conclusion as the live specimens of wild and transitional forms show China's claim.
Yet the fossil "evidence" shown should not have been presented because it is fraught with so many errors, it just causes confusion and is plain wrong. The documentary states “According to C-14 dating they (broad leaf magnolia) are related to large leaf tea.” I heard them say 木兰 so their is no mistake on translation, this fossil was probably the ancestor of Magnolia liliiflora, the Mulan Magnolia, of present day China.
First these magnolia fossil leaves existing 35 million years ago could not be dated by C-14 since that method cannot be used beyond 60,000 years. Second, C-14 dating shows no relationship between species only the age of a fossil or object. Third, Camellia sinensis, the tea plant, is a member of the Eudicots which diverged in China from the earlier Magnoliids (of which Magnolias are a member) between 123 and 127 million years ago in the lower Cretaceous (twice the age of T. Rex). They are related only that they are flowering plants and are not close relatives as was implied.
