Would Vat-Grown Woolly Mammoths be GMOs?
A fan wants to know if GMO is too broad a category? Should organisms grown from individually edited sequences of DNA be treated the same as golden rice or vat-grown meat? What about vat-grown Woolly Mammoths? Of course Bill Nye is all over this one, but, much to Bill’s surprise, so is co-host Chuck Nice. Bill wants to get past the semantics of the various distinctions, and talk instead about why he thinks GMOs are good things, and how Genetically Modified Organisms got conflated with Mad Cow Disease (BSE) and led to misunderstandings about GMOs. Bill also ponders the use of GMO to bring back extinct species, like the Woolly Mammoth, and whether that would be a good thing or not. This "Behind the Scenes" video was shot during the recording of our episode, " Cosmic Queries: GMOs with Bill Nye (Part 1)." screw cloning extinct animals. we should be cloning endangered animals that have a population of less than 5000 in the wild.
-
Bring back ewoks
-
You can't bring back any of those animals because DNA is something that deteriorates very fast even if we humans would make the best possible environment. You can identify DNA thousands of years back from partial samples but you need a complete nucleus DNA sample for recreation.
It's useless to say "we should do it" if we already know it can't be done. Dinosaur DNA is completely destroyed. Woolly Mammoth DNA with nature's best preservation is also too far gone to replicate. All the awesome animals from the quaternary extinction are gone and can't be brought back.
But there is one alternative for which humans are too short-sighted to do. If you have the patience and living cousins of an animal, you can selectively breed back to the extinct specie. It will take thousands of years but it would be the only actual working way to do it. -
I'd go to a zoo/game preserve just to see a mammoth

WOW. Chuck is a bit of a fucktard. "i'm against zoo's"
get bent asshole. -
Could we repopulate say Alaska with woolly mammoths? Then again they might get shot by some crazy lady in a helicopter up there.
-
The reason why it's a good idea to bring back something like a mammoth isn't in the need to have them in the wild again, it's public awareness, show them the fantastic beasts & they'll become passionate about the little creatures like the frogs & other less notable animals that still play a huge role in the ecosystems. The mammoth is just a way to market the idea.

Why can't we bring back the Megalodon, give them metal legs, bullet proof armor and lasers? It would be a benefit to all mankind to no longer be the Apex predator.
-
Passenger pigeon!
-
Umm, I guess since you are used to radio, you figure, no pants required, ha. Well you might want to reconsider when you have that wide angle shot going.
