Goddamn that looks uncomfortable.

I have a hard time believing the hobb nails were mostly for extending the life of the boot. Hobnails have always been used for for just traction. I would assume that having the hobnails would help make the boots last longer but I doubt that was the.....sole.....reason.

As the owner of the items in this collection and videoed by Chris B. at a recent NJACC show I welcome constructive criticism, and additional info. I am not an expert nor do I clam to be. The items are displayed for all to enjoy. I have well over 3000 items in my 40 year collection from the Civil War thru WW2 including Ordnance { Hand Grenades } and long arms . Chris has had an opportunity to view and record a few . I do these presentation as a public service, and to share the collection. Enjoy.

Makes you appreciate the power of an industrial country. My eye was drawn towards the picture with the soldier wearing the equipment and I couldn't stop remarking how he has leather boots, with a decent size heel. Austro-hungarians in the winter offensives, note the plural form, offensives, were wearing shoes with carton soles, in -30 C weather of the Carpathian Mountains. 800 thousands of them did not return.

Interesting thing about the Montana peak hat. In the period of western settlement, the newly formed Canadian paramilitary force the North West Mounted Police began to patrol what is now Saskatchewan and Alberta. The officers wore a white pith helmet and the enlisted men black pill boxes, but this was uncomfortable. So, troopers began to purchase civilian hats, particularly the Stetson and shaped them in the way that is fashionable. This was popularized by Sam Steel as comedant in the Yukon durring the Klondike gold rush, and throughout the British Empire when it became the standard Canadian headdress in the Boer War. This style was then adopted by other countries like Australia who wore a wool hat (instead of beaver felt) and the US forces.

Super cool,man!
I like too much the aesthetics of ww1! -
I've been told that the auxiliary pack for non com officers was for carrying, among other things, a razor blade stropper which was shared by a group of men to extend the lives of their new double edge razor blades. Shaving was important as it enhanced the fit of gas masks but men were also required to save steel - so razor blades were considered far less 'disposable' than they are today of course.
