Denmark inaugurated the world's biggest offshore wind farm on Thursday. When it gets up to full capacity, with its 91 turbines, it can produce a capacity of 209 megawatts. Thats enough electricity for about 200,000 homes. Owned by DONG Energy, the Horns Rev 2 wind park development cost $694 million U.S. dollars. Its situated 30 kilometers off the coast of western Denmark. Now its the world's biggest offshore wind park. But only until Londons planned Thames estuary wind park is finished in 2012 with 341 turbines. [Anders Elderup, DONG Energy CEO]: We are impressed and proud that we built the biggest turbine park in the world, but we have also gained a lot of knowledge from a lot of new adventures here that we have been engaged in. So we take a big step forward in the development in off shore wind here. During the 18 months it took to construct the wind park, the technicians were living on a hotel boat. But from January, the wind park maintenance workers, or technicians, will live on the Poseidon platform next to the substation, near the wind park. The wind farm will be manned year-round. Wind technician Carsten Holm Jensen is looking forward to living on the platform. [Carsten Holm Jensen, Wind Technician]: "First of all I like the wind and the fresh air. It's always nice to be out on the sea, you know. But the special thing is, that we've build the worlds biggest windmill park — and with a platform for living. From now on we're going to live out here. But its not easy work. The technicians are out for twelve hours every day working on the mills and the weather in the North Sea can be very rough in the winter months. The turbines are from Siemens and rise 114.5 meters above sea level. An additional 30 to 40 meters are below the surface.
