National statistics show that the average income of farming households in India is below the poverty line. And, approximately 48% of children under 5 in India are malnourished, a proportion that is double that of sub-Saharan Africa. Women farmers form a critical link between agriculture, household income and nutritional status. Targeting women farmers and the nutrient-rich crops that they grow can help address both income and nutrition objectives.
