One Of The Worlds Biggest Producers of Farmed Salmon is The Norwegian Company called Marine Harvest,
They are fooling the Public by advertising and labeling as Organic Salmon, There is No Comparison in Taste or Protein as the Wild Atlantic Salmon, This Company has messed up the genetic makeup of the Wild Salmon because some have escaped from the Rearing cages and bred with the wild species thus reducing their Natural Migration and a loss of direction. -

You must order all your food online because supermarkets are full of farmed fish, antibiotic and hormone treated meats, pesticide treated fruits and vegetables. I live in Canada, and I have never seen Alaskan salmon for sale ANYWHERE..... They have farmed Atlantic salmon in 99% of the places and occasionally you'll find some wild pacific or chinook. As long as you have a balanced diet and you don't eat fish every day for the rest of your life, you will be fine eating farmed salmon. Salmon is one of the lowest mercury containing fish on the market and its very nutrient rich. Wild salmon contain 3x more Mercury levels than farmed (that's a fact quoted in every paper i've read) and farmed salmon contain much more toxic chemicals like PCBEs than wild. Both have their own advantages. As for OMEGA 3, the content can easily be similar, it depends if the farmed fish get chopped up, dry fish food or if they receive more grain based meals. The amount of OMEGA 3 in a fish should not be the only reason you eat fish. I like to diversify my meals and I eat it as a pleasure. I couldn't care less if it had half the OMEGA 3 wild fish has. I know a ton of people who barely eat any fish and don't take any supplements either. You have to relax your view on life. There are far more dangerous things in life than a farmed salmon you have once every 2 weeks or month..

of course the bottom line is we can never replace the natural ways and can not suppliment natural produce : take it in any field !

Although the comments here are heartfelt, it's unfortunate that some of the people making them are misinformed. Just because we eat feedlot cattle doesn't mean we should make the same mistake with salmon.
The reality is that the excess fat on farmed salmon is NOT good to consume, it's also the wrong type of Omega fat.
If you kill all the baitfish to feed farmed salmon, what will the rest of the wild fish eat?
If you feed farmed salmon soy which is high in estrogen, or ground chicken guts, what do you think it transfers to people who eat farmed salmon? The truth is, we don't know exactly what it does, but are you willing to take the risk with your kids? Less than 50 years ago we didn't consider smoking harmful, or drinking and driving. Thankfully we evolved.
The salmon aquaculture industry was launched into open oceans before proper testing and procedures were recognized and regulated. Being an early adopter can sometimes be a good thing. No one would argue that being first to market is lucrative for fish farmers, lazy chefs, and greedy seafood processors who raise, cook, and sell farmed salmon. If they can convince you to eat it, fine, but at least they should tell you all the consequences.
Jumping in prematurely before scientists understand all the consequences has proven harmful to the oceans and especially to wild salmon. Norway, where large scale salmon farming originated, and Chile, experienced catastrophic collapses of their fisheries specific to salmon farming. We don't want the same thing to happen in Alaska or Canada.
Comparing wild to farmed salmon is like comparing heritage tomatoes to waxy varietals grown hydroponically in winter greenhouses using fossil fuels. About the only similarity is the name.
If processors, grocers, and chefs are so proud to sell factory farmed salmon, why don't they label it more transparently on menus and shelves and quit riding on the history and back of wild? They don't do it because if you knew what you were eating and how it harms the environment you wouldn't buy it. It's that simple.
BTW, if you want Omega-3, you can eat a wide variety of other foods that are cheaper and more accessible than salmon, like kale, sardines, hazelnuts, flax, beans, squash, olive oil, etc. The Omega-3 argument is something fish farmers cooked up to get naive people to take the bait. Fish On! -

Farmed salmon are fed ground up baitfish. Basically, they are just fattier versions of wild salmon. Equivalent of farmed cows vs wild bovines. Farmed salmon are still chock full of omega 3 fatty acids. Actually several times the amount of wild salmon, due to higher fat content of farmed salmon. Source: "Four Fishes".

i personally don't agree to this. But this is a question. Do we need farmed salmon? I agree the old ways are bad but what about closed containment?

Too right about farmed fish. I loved catfish as a child. (Raised in the south in the 50s). The first time I had farmed catfish, I was appalled. It tasted and felt weird and, worse, it had fat! Yuck! I don't eat catfish anymore. I'm super careful what fish I eat and have very little compared to the past - just to not put a strain on what's left in the ocean. And, yes, I totally trust (and savor) what's on the menu at Aroma Thyme!
