Why I'm a Pro-GMO Vegan (and 9 gmo myths dispelled)
I'm a vegan who supports genetic modification. In this video, I explain the 3 reasons why I advocate for genetic modification and also look at the common claims against gm crops (below): 1: There's no evidence showing GM crops are safe 2: GM crops cause cancer 3: GM crops cause allergies 4: GM crops create super weeds 5: GM crops exist because of "corporate greed" 6: MONSANTO!!!!! 7: GM crops are bad for farmers 8: GM crops have been banned in Europe 9: GM crops are unnatural ****References**** Golden Rice http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/project_syndicate0/2013/02/gm_food_golden_rice_will_save_millions_of_people_from_vitamin_a_deficiency.html http://thebreakthrough.org/index.php/programs/conservation-and-development/how-genetically-modified-crops-can-save-hundreds-of-thousands-from-malnutrition Bt Cotton http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/abs/nature11153.html?message-global=remove http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2012/jun/13/gm-crops-environment-study GM Meta-analysis http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0111629 Pro-GMO Vegan Website http://www.vegangmo.com/ Insulin http://geneticliteracyproject.org/2014/07/01/anti-gmo-advocates-try-to-scare-diabetics-off-life-saving-genetically-engineered-drug-treatment/ GM Vegan Cheese http://singularityhub.com/2014/07/21/biohackers-make-lab-grown-vegan-cheese-by-milking-genetically-modified-yeast-cells/ https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/real-vegan-cheese Safety http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/07388551.2013.823595 http://www.forbes.com/sites/jonentine/2013/10/14/2000-reasons-why-gmos-are-safe-to-eat-and-environmentally-sustainable/ Cancer (Seralini Rat Study) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A9ralini_affair http://www.enveurope.com/content/26/1/14 Allergies http://geneticliteracyproject.org/2014/04/16/are-gmos-causing-an-increase-in-allergies/ http://academicsreview.org/reviewed-content/genetic-roulette/section-3/3-1-gm-soybeans-and-allergens/ http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8594427 Organic e. coli outbreak http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Germany_E._coli_O104:H4_outbreak Weed Resistance http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0111629 Monsanto sues farmers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsanto_Canada_Inc_v_Schmeiser http://www.forbes.com/sites/jonentine/2013/02/19/farmers-deception-at-center-of-monsanto-gmo-soybean-scotus-patent-challenge-genetic-innovation-threatened/ Profit gains for farmers http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0111629 Ruby Red Grapefruit & Mutagenisis http://geneticliteracyproject.org/2015/02/05/pasta-ruby-grapefruits-why-organic-devotees-love-foods-mutated-by-radiation-and-chemicals/ Natural/Unnatural Logical Fallacy (me!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPZ3crZES-c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MxD7BdgOl4 Norman Bourlaug on Biotech and Anti-Science Ideology http://www.plantphysiol.org/content/124/2/487 Mark Lynas Lecture (why he's now pro-gmo) http://www.marklynas.org/2013/01/lecture-to-oxford-farming-conference-3-january-2013/ Subscribe: http://youtube.com/fitonraw Follow me (weirdo): https://www.facebook.com/unnaturalvegan https://instagram.com/unnaturalvegan http://twitter.com/unnaturalvegan Give me money (patreon): https://www.patreon.com/unnaturalvegan Give me MORE money (recipe books): https://gumroad.com/unnaturalvegan Watch me talk about movies: http://youtube.com/ladylovesfilm

I hate it when youtube puts this in autoplay. So annoying.
Bite size vegan is a lot better. -
Thank you so much for making this video. I'm so glad to have discovered your channel and found another science-oriented vegan!

Of course pesticide use went down, because their herbicide kills everything but the GMO plant including people. How the hell do you make a video on the subject and fail to omit that simple fact? That same herbicide beaks down into several other toxic chemicals that can in fact kill you and if you eat GMOs or even live where they are gown you can get a toxicology test and see that they are in fact in your body, go read the MSDS on that stuff. There in lies the problem with the studies, if you want to do a study Monsanto insists on supplying the food sample which will be free of glyphosate and it's chemical products but that is not how they are sold to consumers. We call that bad science, and yes it is ILLEGAL for a farmer to provide you a sample for testing without the permission of Monsanto. Does anyone else see the potential for a massive fraud there?
Then there are the horrific ecological consequences of glyphosate, now to be fair the vast majority of herbicides and pesticides are BAD stuff but glyphosate is among the worst, and you don't even need a scientific study to tell you that, just go downstream of an agricultural area after a heavy rain. Anyone concerned with animal welfare should be opposed to this toxin.
Long story short I am not opposed to experimenting with genetic modification, but it should never be released into the world until it has been extensively tested and should never be an excuse to use more toxins. -
ok. so this makes sense. i retract anything neg i have said about you. im glad u cleared this up. 😃

there is no vitamin A in plant foods, they have precursors of vitamin A, and they are poorly convert to real vitamin A.
and GMOs, destroy native fauna and flora.
You are ignorant, and a little bit of knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge. -
I 100% support gmo crops, there's absolutely nothing wrong with genetic modification on its own, BUT the reason I try to eat non gmo food when I can is simply because of one reason, glyphosate. Organic crops don't use glyphosate, and while I do realize they use their own pesticides/herbicides, I would rather be able to wash those off my vegetables than eat glyphosate, which infiltrates the molecules of plants. Gm crops are an amazing technological advancement for the continuation of the human race, but because of corporate stupidity and greed they've decided to engineer plants that are capable of tolerating a deadly poison, which humans cannot tolerate. They stop using glyphosate and I'll never have a reason to eat organic again.

I'm just anti pestecide.. and Pro life.. lets all have a peace of land to grow our own food and freedom to share and a Right to Minerals and good soil and good water and good climate.. which means no owning.. just sharing and temporary occupying a place or land.. like occupying a chair...free moving to where ever and forget taking over someone else's fruit of labor by force for ones own profit... then GMO is not nessesary.. but that scenario is 1000 years ahead... chill and peace! Nice video.. good hard serious work you have done.. 👏 we need more people doing this work.. I am Working on my own style.. not pretty... so I might be a better commentator than an actual youtuber... but I want to... I am just too undecided.. confused... have brain Fog ... trying out different diets... sleeping... researching... you guys are gold to me.. thank you soo much for being here for people like me🌞

I understand what your saying and you have great points that I've never heard or considered bit it just seems unnatural. sure there are those benefits, which I totally get and believe but there are some cases where some GMOs that have been proven to be bad but not all GMOS. I just think that they are not natural and that you can get your vitamins from any plant food
-
I think it's quite dangerous to outright promote them, it's neither a black or white answer. The lack of transparency kind of scares me and also to what extent will the limits will be pushed. You may say they're a good thing initially but where will it stop? How far is it going to go? It could cause everlasting and irreversible consequences to humans and our NATURAL environment.
I know there could be some possible benefits but I see a larger scope of threats to be honest. Just imagine how bad GMOs could be if they were manipulated maliciously and irresponsibly. GMOs could be easily used as biological warfare and be used to manipulate people's DNA. As they say 'you are what you eat'. Consequently, I can see GMOs been used to help manage overpopulation causing people to become infertile or cause possible birth defects (A scenario similar to the film 'Children of Men'). -
Unnatural Vegan (UV) is pro-GMO but she only considers the little picture. Take her argument about golden rice. She brings up arguments by environmentalists Bjørn Lomborg and Mark Lynas However, in the cited articles neither of these authors address environmental issues. For example, the impact of Bt corn on monarch butterflies is analyzed from perspective of impact of the corn's pollen on the butterflies --- which is negligible. However, th. e impact of the extreme effectiveness of glyphosate on eliminating all competing, nontarget plants (such as milkweed) from a monoculture crop environment is not addressed. The disappearance of milkweed must be devastating to the survival of the monarch.
While golden rice can combat issues such as vitamin A deficiency, Unnatural vegan fails to comtemplate the bigger picture --- how did all of this vitamin A deficiency arise? How could these populations become successful with persistent vitamin A deficiency? What factors have caused this vitamin A deficiency and can to short term fixes such as golden rice eradicate the cause of the problem rate or will it simply exacerbate the cause?
Here are just a few issues UV does not address:
- lasting impact of glyphosate on environment
- ethical concerns emerging from DNA patents and resulting ownership of species individual (patents on life)
- glyphosate related elimination of wild crops (sources of diverse species variations)
- political ramifications of GMO
- socioeconomic ramifications of GMO
Unnatural Vegan is a persuasive speaker, but she has failed to consider the bigger picture. Viewers need to extend their GMO education far beyond the overly simplistic analysis UV presents in this video. I only address one issue in this comment and see how long the comment itself is? -
Finally!!!!! Love your videos!!! Too many vegans are against GMO without even knowing what is a transgenic plant. I always end up in useless debates full of ignorance and arrogance. I am a scientist and a vegan and know that the bad thing about GMOs are the companies behind them . Like for every other product. But there are applications for GMOs that are absolutely wonderful. And people only go crazy when you talk about transgenic plant, without knowing that a lot of substances they are consuming come from transgenic bacterias.
-
animal and people will suffer, with or without GMO, it is not the end all. it is not the final or best solution to our problems. also this lady got issues lol.
-
anyone who is anti gmo and uses the word 'pesticides' or 'chemicals' doesn't know what a gmo is
-
if gmos are so safe why don't you eat 10,000 apples in 5 minutes.. derp
-
You're beautiful, funny, and you elegantly articulate a great message. Ignore the haters; fear is hard to penetrate. It's so much easier to be dismissive when you're privileged.

Thank you -and your cats.

As some one who studies Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!! All the myths that people believe are ridiculous, and anyone who is against gmo is likely uneducated in the field of biology. There is so much potential people, stop holding it back.

LOVE your hair in this video!!!

Do they feed corn to cows In Germany? I´d be very surprised if they do.
