What We Learned: VLOG no.7 | Fresh Princess
Here’s what we learned at this years National Heirloom Expo in Santa Rosa, California: biodiversity is not only awe inspiring, it’s vital to support as diverse a food system as we can for the health of our environment and our species. Look at the sheer number of squash varieties from all over the world! It’s incredible and I didn’t even document a fraction of the varieties on display. The same goes for tomatoes, melons, garlic, corn, the variety is staggering. We traveled to California for this three day event to learn from speakers, vendors and other gardeners and food enthusiasts who are all interested in preserving our cultural food heritage. Dani Hari, aka Food Babe was there, Ronnie Cummins, the director of Organic Consumers Association presented, the team behind US Right to Know spoke. This event draws people from all around the country, on stage were authors, chefs, activists, scientists and educators all coming together to learn tips on how to build a sustainable food system by utilizing smart farming practices, seed preservation and biodiversity. AND we learned the proper way to store and brew puerh - pu-erh - puer tea. It was fantastic. All of the squash varieties were amazing. I have always thought of the warty (for lack of a better term) looking varieties as more ornamental, they look intimidating.

love the video. love hearing about the truth in media advocates. I had an encounter with a shoplifter and quickly bitterness was turned to this guy, which i understand, but people everyday ignore the misdeeds of the media, the politicians, etc, and basically condone the behavior. It sucks. Nice to have people out trying to do good.

Looks like you were in haven at the Expo... I have not seen that many kinds and verity of squash/melons. Did you get some seeds so you can plant them this coming year? On the way home, some of those goodies at end could be thought of as sin on a plate! ;)

Who doesn't love cuddling up with the Baker Creek Seed catalog and hot cuppa?
I don't wear make-up any longer (allergies) and all of my skin care products are made by my real-life friend whose products are made in his home and certified organic. It's crazy out there! -

John from Growing Your Own Greens was there as well and interviewed a few people. Here is his youtube link. https://www.youtube.com/user/growingyourgreens It really opens your eyes to how many varieties of vegetables there are. So many options and yet majority still buy vegetables from supermarkets that are made specially for their ability to ripen after picked for shipping. Great video, you're awesome I'm always excited to watch your videos.
