What's a GMO? Are GMOs Safe? Learn the Shocking Truth
John from http://www.growingyourgreens.com/ interviews special Guest, Jeffrey Smith in his garden. In this episode, you will learn the answers to many questions you may have about Genetically Modified Organisms and how they can affect you and your family. You will discover if GMO Foods are safe as well as if GMO crops can feed the world. You will also find out if they actually SAVE water in these times of drought and much, much more. After watching this episode, you will be more educated on the GMO issue and be better able to determine if you would like to include GMO foods in you and your families diet. In this episode, John asks Jeffrey the following questions: 03:05 What is your background and why do you know so much about GMOs? 04:50 What is a GMO? and what does G M O Stand for? 07:44 Haven't humans been modifying plants for hundreds of years? 08:10 Are GMOs really different than Hybrid seeds or Heirloom Seeds? 10:00 How are GMOs different than traditional breeding techniques? 11:07 What are some of the different GMO crosses that have been done? 11:45 Did they Genetically Modify Tomatoes with Fish Genes? 12:04 What are the common foods in the Supermarket that are GMO? 14:39 Are there any studies on what happens to animals when they eat GMO foods? 16:45 What are some of the problems with glyphosate and RoundUp? 20:58 What are the problems associated with eating meat and GMOs? 21:38 GMOs are not poison. Hi
I loved the detailed info, but for me a big issue was left out.Monsanto and a few other seed companies control almost all the commercial seed crops grown. The loss of gene pool diversity is a BIG issue, if one bug or virus targets their seeds almost all production of that crop could be destroyed. This has happened before it the Irish potatoe famine and as we grow fewer kinds of seeds we are more and more subject to mass crop losses. Having only a few seed companys control the majority of seed production makes everyone at risk. This is my argument I use against those that say GMO's are safe is that with the huge costs of developing these seeds(and the co reliance on the use of roundup) makes them need to sell them to everyone they can to get back the cost of seed development.
I grow a flint corn here that has been grown is this valley of Vermont almost 100 years, it is very short season(90 days) and is part of the gene pool that is threatened by gmo's. If my corn gets contaminated by gmo corn they can make me stop growing it because I stole their gmo genes, but I can't sue them for destroying my gene pool. For those that are intrested I gave Tom Sterns of High Mowing seeds some of this years ago and it is available from him as Roy's Calais 8 row corn and is also available from seed savers exchange.
It is not just the health effects of the crops it the danger they pose to orther varities that they will contamiate and the lost of the larger gene pool as a whole.
Thank you for a great series of videos.. -
Awesome interview!
-
Very informative. Thanks.
-
you should do an episode on BPAs.... that a huge problem with packaged food... bigger than GMO
-
ask him when they're going to put the genes from coca and opium poppy into cannabis so that Monsanto can make the British look like they were nice to the Chinese.
okay. ive made my opinion more than well known. -
also. today, gene splicing is much more accurate. that said, Monsanto is still the problem. not the word GMO
-
pesticides and lacking trace minerals are the problems.... not all GMOs are bad.. the ones that tolerate pesticides are bad. because they can tolerate what we cannot.
-
not that I like Monsanto... they're the reason people think GMOs are bad
literally every single crop we grow are GMOs. Everytime we selectively breed, we create a GMO. we have no idea the repercussions of any gene changes "artificial" (extra radiation, gene implantation) or natural selection and natural changes in DNA. -
wow!!! Great information.
-
You want to have a clear view of GMOs and you get a leading anti-GMO advocate to tell you it? Nice.
-
super funny that the prevideo ad was for gmo consumption. lady saying it is safe and then this video is exact opposite, almost like Monsanto saw this vid and wanted the first word. lol
-
This guy is talking shit!
-
One of the best vidjas I've seen on YouTube John... Sharing often, Thanks!
-
John, you should know they put a commercial before this video promoting GMOs and touting their safety.
-
Gmos are so bad!!!!!! I mean no one has gotten sick or died from them, but they're bad!!!! Fucking liars. These clowns spread nothing but lies
-
Gmo corn doesn't produce toxins. It produces a naturally occurring protein than some bugs can't digest. They literally don't get nutrients and they die. Not from toxins
-
Gmos don't mix genetics from different species. This guy is a liar
-
Hahahahaha neither of these tool bags know anything about gmos. There are zero side effects from gmos except a healthier environment. They require less water, fewer nutrients, and much much less harmful herbicides and pesticides.
-
I recently listened to an interview with Natasha Campbell-McBride, M.D. who works in England and she said many of her patients who have newborn babies are so toxic that their milk is too toxic for their baby!!! Ppl all around the world have Glyphosate in their urine. It is everywhere: in the soil, food, water, and air. Colombia sprayed Glyphosate on their crops growing on the border to Ecuador and ppl living in Ecuador, who were not eating the Colombian food, got sick and there was a fight between the two countries and finally Colombia had to stop the spraying.

thanks! good info without the fear mongering. This does beg the question however. If and when the genetic technology reaches a point where genes may be spliced at will, in a precise fashion, (CRISPER comes to mind) will that change the story? do you see a time when GMOs will be mostly safe? rather than mostly harmful? great vid!
