What is Salvia?
Salvia divinorum, despite sounding like a spell from the world of Harry Potter, can't turn you into an inanimate object, make you leave your body, or set your feet on fire. However, it can make you FEEL like all of those things are happening. This little plant is a hallucinogen - one so powerful and unique that the DEA isn't quite sure how to regulate it. Hank's got the details on this psychotropic member of the sage genus in this episode of SciShow. Like SciShow? It's legal in the UK, or at least it was. When I tried 20x salvia it just made me feel super stoned for like 2 minutes, it was shit but my mate kept rubbing his legs on the floor saying he was pumping a windmill for the little flower people. Whatever the fuck that meant

Is it only divinorum or are the other salvia species psychotropic as well?
-
I'd argue that DMT is the most powerful psychedelic

Am I wrong when I say I can imagine from the videos I've seen that I reckon I know exactly what the salvia experience is like without having tried it? Yeah, yeah, I know 'you can't know until yada yada' but come on - you CAN know. You know? ;

who here thought he was doing saliva

Wow, being that it acts on the opiate receptors that makes the experience a friend of mine had make a lot of sense. Basically, my friends and I had gotten a hold of salvia several years ago and we all had pretty intense trips, but when one of our older (over 40yr) friends tried it, a friend who had severe problems with opiate addiction- that friend had the most intense trip we had seen, in comparison to our own and even those we had seen online. Given that opiate addiction often works through increasing the amount of opiate receptors in the brain, our opiate-addicted friend would presumably have a significantly greater amount of opiate receptors than the rest of us (who did not have any exposure to opiates). If salvia acts on the opiate receptors, then it would make sense that having more opiate receptors would cause a more intense trip, as seen in our friend. This is just one person, but it could be grounds for further investigation to find if opiate use is associated with more intense salvia trips. A potential confound, however, would be that this friend also suffers from schizophrenia; which may also influence the nature of the experience. The the question is: does opiate addiction increase the potency of salvia by proxy of having more opiate receptors to be acted on by the active compounds in salvia that act on these opiate receptors?
PS
In good news, that friend no longer uses opiates after having been through several recovery programs. I don't think salvia had much to do with this friend kicking the addiction, but I just figured I'd share the fact that this person is off opiates currently and has been for some time. -
