What Is A Liveable Wage In Japan
Quite a number of people coming over to Japan are doing so with large English teaching dispatch companies. It's the habit of these companies to usually offer a starting wage of between ~ 230,000 Yen to 250,000. Many people have asked, is that enough to live on? I know that almost all the Korean English teaching programs either provide you with a teacher apartment or provide you with a housing allowance, do any of the Japanese English teaching programs do anything like that?

Great video sir, now with my my question. My girlfriend and I would love to be in Japan but recently I've been discouraged. I'd love to teach English there but move up with advancements but I'd also like to have a family as well. Most English companies just won't accommodate that sort of life. Having children is just something that me and my gf really want but I wouldn't want to have them while in Japan only to live paycheck to paycheck in a very small house/apartment. If you have some insight on the manner, I'd love to hear it

Hi Dave You have given perfect actual living situation. I agree with you

Dave, I was hoping you give us a breakdown of how much taxes we need to pay in the second year? And what taxes that would be? And are all these taxes compulsory in the second year if you don't have a job in the second year? Looking forward to your prompt response and your upcoming book.

May I ask you an URGENT question. I was offered a job in Okayama City, of which I have one day to decide. With this pay scale as an ALT, would I be able to survive and maybe save money (also considering key fee, cleaning fee, and that I need to pay for my own flight)?
September 2016 ¥250,000 - Up to ¥15,000 for travel - 20 working days
October 2016 ¥250,000 Up - to ¥15,000 for travel - 20 working days

Hey Dave, fantastic video once again. I'm steadily making my way through your channel so forgive the late comment.
I have applied for a position with ECC - my understanding is they pay 270000 with seven weeks paid holidays. I do have financial commitments that need to be paid every month (around £400) would I still be able to live comfortably on this in Tokyo? I hope to be placed in the city with ECC.
many thanks, Beth -
thank you Dave...I have a Qu: Are these numbers including accommodation or not??
-
I'm not sure how good of a springboard this can be considered as they don't do initial skype interviews and I'm not sure just how encompassing it's overseas interview network is

I have an odd one for you. I have credit cards through Navy Federal. Granted I do not owe anything on them. Can one use credit cards there? If so it would help alot. I will have about 10k$ to bring with me in cash and then another 11k in available credit. I also thank you for the Altia, I applied but I think it is slim as they mainly only hire within Japan.

How would you find work besides being a English teacher? it seems like its hard finding work as a foreigner in japan especially if you speak little Japanese.
-
Great videos Dave! I've been watching your stuff now for a few weeks. Have you ever thought of starting up your own school? You seem like you would do good being your own boss. With greater risk comes greater rewards.

Thanks a lot for this video! It helped a ton. I have many years left, but I want to be an English teacher in Japan 😁

Hey Dave, love your channel. I've been interested in teaching in Japan for almost 2 years now (I live in America) and I was going to sign on with Interac before I saw this link you posted on this video about Altia. Can you make another video kind of contrasting the two companies, how your job is different and any thing else you can think of? Thanks a lot. -Eric

I was thinking of doing a Co-op program for CompSci in Japan next year. The pay ranges anywhere from (140,000-250,000 yen) after taxes and they cover the dorm, electricity, commuting. I have to pay for food, cell, health insurance and the rest I guess is w/e I need. I'm sure the experience will be great but my question is... would you consider this a liveable wage? especially at the lower end of the payscale... haha I'm just curious maybe money goes further in Japan than in Canada or something cause wages seem to consistently be lower there than at home. Anyways... back to binge watching some more vids

Hey dude :) have some questions 1) do you have to pay taxes and stuff yourself or does the company deduct it automatically ? 2) Ok second year ... if one gets 230 000 pr month and you want to say one gets taxed 300 000 a month ?!!! or i didnt quite get something ? :D 3) Is it possible to find a job before coming to japan or you have to be in japan for some time before going for a job hunt ?

I'm moving to Tokyo for a software engineering job in about 5 months, and I've been compulsively watching jvloggers to get a feel for expat life in Japan. Your channel is one of the channels I keep coming back to because your videos are generally relatable (not to mention informative!), so thanks! :D
