How exactly do I stabilize a hybrid?
-
what are heirlooms? they are seeds and plants from lines that have preserved for years and generally produce true to parent plants,... not hybridized

Great convo. Good info.
So, hybrids are marked-driven....but they often they are patented too (plus that they won't produce true hybrid offspring) is this correct ?
I was left with a hole in my thinking or in my garden, on various points....
GMO's are thought of as bad because they can cross-pollinate with other varieties.....but hybrids and heirlooms can cross-pollinate too , correct ? If I grow 5 heirloom tomato plants, and save the seeds....they might have crossed. Saving heirloom seeds is a great idea if they're inside a secluded greenhouse, but in an open garden, crosses will often happen.
"Organic Seeds" is a technical USDA term describing that the seeds came from cert organically grown parents. It does not mean that your seeds are any different from conventionally grown seeds, even though you raise the seed into plants organically from that point on. People often think, "if it's an organic seed, it will be an organic plant".....which is logically wrong.
Something not mentioned about the huge misconception where home garden seed companies claim to only sell "non-GMO seeds". No home garden seeds are GMO....ever. You could not buy them even if you tried, unless you are a commercial, wide-scale licensed commercial grower.
BTW....I grow heirloom varieties and hybrids, and I have strict organic garden.
Just my thoughts. -
I get my seeds almost exclusively from Baker Creek. Wonderful company, high germination rates, and fantastic, friendly customer service. So pleased to see this interview with Jere Gettle. Thank you!

Trade Winds seed out of Santa Rosa Ca. has great selection and VERY affordable...
-
all hybrids do not hide their stories..I will go toe toe to with any Materhead...and I tell ya mate, Big Beef is a damn fine hybrid...very disease resistant.. productive. Does not have all the Flavor of say Brandywine...but don't sneeze at em...read the stories...and for Natures sake be smart enough not to plant or try and cross hybrids...dis hybrids you are talking trash bout Luther Burbank...and that dog don't hunt...
-
where did you get this guy, he is a disgrace to overalls!!

John, thanks for shouting out rareseeds, I almost bought seeds from another site that charged more for the same heirlooms!

Great video. Please interview this man again, he seems to know a lot about seeds. I save my seeds a lot even from what ever I buy at the groceries store :)

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds!! Totally love them. I bought most of my seeds from them this year. Looking through the catalog is like heaven for me. If I could, I would buy them all. They did very well for me in NV. Of course you should buy climate appropriate plants. Thanks for sharing.

Jere's catalog makes me crazy. I want to grow so many things in my little 10*10ft plot.

I love your videos, John and I've learned so much that I can put into practice in my own garden. You've done a video in the past on survival gardening and I'd love it if you did one with the new things you've learned since then. I don't think the whole video was aimed at survivalists but you did suggest some great plants. Thank you for teaching us about gardening :D

this guy reminds me of forrest gump
-
Thanks for this video. It's great to have an authority give a more or less simple explanation for all of this. Good Job!

Nothing is wrong with GMOs, problem is the companies producing them. GMOs can be safe if the companies weren't run by greed. So now we have issues where they release GMO plants that wouldn't have actually been released if they raised their standards, but for them its Money > quality. So they skip out on test, prevent research, rip off the consumers, and even misinform. Overall the shitty companies gave GMOs a bad name.
