Weeding out weedy rice highlights the problems that Sri Lankan farmers are experiencing in their rice fields due to weedy rice. Weedy rice has become a major threat to rice cultivation in many rice-growing countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the USA. It is believed to be a natural hybrid of wild and cultivated rice species, or a result of the degeneration of cultivated rice. As of now, no single management technique can effectively control weedy rice. This video provides recommendations on how to control weedy rice, from results of collaborative research studies among IRRI, the Rice Research and Development Institute in Sri Lanka, University of Ruhuna, and the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium (IRRC; http://web2.irri.org/Our-Partners/Networks/Irrigated-Rice-Research-Consortium.html ) funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
