US Mega Dairies Going British
Find more Earth Focus content at https://www.linktv.org/earthfocus Mega diaries produce large amounts of milk at lower cost but there is a high price to pay - for people, cows and the environment. Large scale dairy farms in the US have expanded by more than 90% in the last ten years and they're putting small and mid-sized dairies out of business. Bigger farms also mean more air and water pollution and they raise ethical concerns. With plans under review to open Europe's first US style mega dairy in England, Britain's Ecologist TV goes to California for an inside look at US factory dairy farms.

I am a herd manager from the north of England, I milk 220 cows which are housed in comfortable strawed yards in winter to keep them warm, dry and safe and in summer they have 20 hours a day out in the fields ( the other 4 hours being when they are in for milking... 2 hours in the morning 2hours in the afternoons). I am pro dairy farming but dead against mega dairies.. I pride myself in knowing each of my 220 cows on an almost family level and honestly, they probably get treated better than my wife lol. I couldn't imagine trying to run 5000+ cows to a standard that means they are getting the best quality of care possible. big isn't always best!

You think these dairys are being saturated by pesticides and herbicides I can promise you the tomatoes you eat, the wine you drink, and the marijuana you smoke is even worse.

I love the way dairy cows eat 4:48

Mega dairies are the way of the future due to the fact small farm can not compete unless they grow bigger for the income of the small farm come from the production of milk. The cost of maintaining a herd of milk cows is costly for the farm has to feed, and a cow for a month until it has a calf to begin the milk process and then the calf has to feed for 12 months until she can be breed and thereafter for another nine months until she has a calf but all the while depending on the production of milk to pay for all of these. Then pay for fuel, and the tractors and equipment to make the food to feed the herd of milk cows unless the farm has more production of milk to pay for the cost of running the farm then it will soon go out of business.

these mega dairies are flooding the market causing low milk prices for all dairys

Almond milk has 50% more calcium and only thirty calories per cup than dairy milk (dairy has 140 calories per cup and almost no calcium)! Milk is so bad for us. It's used to support a baby calve and help it gain 500 pounds. Not only that, we shouldn't be drinking it considering what these poor animals are going through. And I mean all animals. Milking, animal testing, slaughtering, skinning, etc. needs to stop. In other words... vegan<3

Unbiased??? Uh, Link TV needs to show something which is nothing but slant! This sure wasn't unbiased!

you obviously don't know anything about farming or the agricultural industry, or even how hormones and antibiotics work, and the regulations on the dairy industry, so this is all the time i'm going to waste with you

To: JCB411abuser Most factory farmed animals are topped up with medication which will pass into our bodies if we eat their meat. Growth hormones will make us fatter and antibiotics will stop being affective on us. I’m scared for people who eat factory farmed meat or drink FF milk. Fields spread this “fertilizer” will also be marred with growth hormones and antibiotics as the yield grows. For healthy meat, milk and wheat we need cows to live on lush grass run by compassionate family farmers
