Unusual Chinese vegetable grows in city backyard
My friends have a large, productive, backyard food garden in Richmond, B.C. One vegetable they grow is most unusual and delicious. At dinner the other night, I asked my generous hostess to tell me about this Chinese vegetable, which she both grows and cooks. They call it "Orsun" in Mandarin. www.cityfarmer.info

I haven't seen it in new zealand sadly, but I grew up eating it, both leaves and the stem are fabulously tasty in complete different styles and flavours

they call it Wosun or more specifically Woju, in English we refer to it as Celtuce, it is a stem lettuce sometimes also called Chinese lettuce, Asparagus lettuce or Celery lettuce, the stem or root of this vegetable actually represents the Japanese river stem radish known as Wasabi all though they taste very different.

I love how we chinese bred lettuce into the typical stem green that we like! Would never know it was lettuce until u taste it.

that is one type of lettuce commonly grown in China, I grow them in Australia as well, but just don't get that beautiful size, can be eaten raw or cooked, the stem is more popular in the kitchen, refreshing and crunchy, leaves are very good to eat when young, and the leaves have almost 10 times of more vitamins than the stem, so eat the whole plant, well done, I need to try harder on my vegetables now

Acutally the name is pronounced wōsǔn in standard mandarin. The lady didn't pronounce the w at all because they were talking in their local dialect which is quite different from standard mandarin. Nice vid anyway.

@neoserenity333 Hey, yup - that's it! It's a type of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. augustana), called "wosun" in mandarin, and "chinese lettuce" or "stem lettuce" in english.
