The US, Japan and 10 other Pacific rim countries have signed a controversial and sweeping trade agreement that covers about 40% of the world economy. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will create a new economic bloc with reduced trade barriers between the 12 nations involved. The deal was signed after five days of talks in Atlanta in the US but has been under negotiation for five years. It was delayed repeatedly by negotiations over drug patents. The other countries included in the TPP are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. The TPP is not comprehensive enough in regards to copyright. There's a lot of missing information that does not cater for the current state of digital media today. It's essentially SOPA all over again. The overall purpose of the scheme is to benefit corporations at the cost of international countries, their governments and their citizens. Remember how various Asian game publishers used YouTube's automated system to block content so that only a few hand-picked channels would be seen? Nintendo even set out to control all Nintendo-related videos through by creating their own network, which forbid the existence of Non-Nintendo game footage on any channels subscribed to the network and even took additional ad revenue from the channels that were part of the network. In 2012, thousands of videos that were over 15 minutes long got ID claims because they contained a few seconds of a song in them.
This is the kind of trouble that certain corporations are going to cause for many people through this scheme, but worse. Any company that produces digital content (such as games, films and music) would be able to claim against any form of critical review that sheds negative light on their products. They could claim that such videos included patented logos or copyright content even when those aspects of the video would normally be allowed under fair use, because such videos would be considered detrimental to the potential sale of the company's products. The producers of bad products would welcome the TPP because it means they would have more ill-informed customers to part their wallets from and whole governments to sue if they allowed journalists to warn individuals that would have been fooled otherwise. Who knows? This might not just be limited to digital products and services either! We could all end up buying into more products and services of similar quality to Windows 8 in places we haven't even thought about.
That's what America has signed up for. This is what these corporations want the world to sign up for. -
