TPP deal good for Asia-Pacific- Japan PM https://youtu.be/jj2PFswDJfg Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday (October 5) welcomed a deal on a sweeping Pacific trade pact, saying it would benefit both Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. "This is the result of two years of hard negotiations and it is a major outcome not just for Japan but also for the future of the Asia-Pacific," Abe told reporters shortly after the deal was clinched. Pacific trade ministers reached agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership that will cut trade barriers and set common standards for 12 countries, an official familiar with the talks said on Monday. Leaders from a dozen Pacific Rim nations are poised to announce the pact later on Monday. The deal could reshape and influence industries, from the price of cheese to the cost of cancer treatments. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters they were able to receive concessions in several agricultural sectors. "We were also able to get exceptions to demands that we abolish tariffs on rice, beef, pork and diary products," he said. "Agriculture is the foundation of the nation and it is a politician's responsibility to protect the beautiful rural landscape we have," he added. The Trans-Pacific Partnership would affect 40 percent of the world economy and would stand as a legacy-defining achievement for U.S. President Barack Obama, if it is ratified by Congress.
