The Sasakawa Peace Foundation invited Ambassador Clayton Keith Yeutter, former US Minister for Agriculture, on the theme of "TPP and US-Japan Relations: The Impact of Japan's Participation" in Tokyo on June 18th, 2012. Ambassador Yeutter is currently a senior advisor of the international law firm, Hogan Lovells. He served as United States Trade Representative (USTR) under President Ronald Regan from 1985 to 1989 and United States Secretary of Agriculture under President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1991. With his professional background, Ambassador Yeutter has supported Japan's participation in TPP. But some may ask: Why should Japan join TPP? Why should the U.S. and other participants want Japan to do so? What will be the benefits to all of us, and what will be the impacts on Japanese foreign policy and security considerations? Ambassador Yeutter discussed and answered those questions, overviewing the on-going TPP negotiations and US-Japan relations in the region.
