In 2014, ACIAR commissioned a project Towards more profitable and sustainable vegetable farming systems in north western Vietnam led by the University of Adelaide and Vietnam Womens Union. The aim of the project is to enhance the profitability and sustainability of smallholder vegetable farmers in north western Vietnam through improved market engagement and resource and disease management practices. The project particularly focuses on women and ethnic minorities engaged in horticultural value chains in Sa Pa and Bac Ha in Lao Cai province. Working with the Womens Union (a socio-political organisation) is central to the success of the project. Women are the drivers of vegetable production and marketing – being involved in all aspects of the chain from farm to market.
