Toward a No-cost Garden: Grow Your Own Food for Next to Nothing (Frugal Gardening)
I'm convinced that the cost of growing your own food can get closer and closer to 0 over time. After initial investments in the first few years on things like garden tools, raised beds, and compost bins, costs can trend toward 0, even as soil fertility and yields continue to improve. I watch your videos again and again. They are so helpful. Got my first batch of used coffee grounds from nearby Starbucks this week and I am beyond elated. I haven't been as successful with composts as I would like. You make it look so easy. Do you have issues with other pests in your garden like chiggers, mosquitoes, no seeums and the like that bite humans ? If yes, do you do anything to control that ?

You do a great job showing what can be done - even in a small space in a suburb in the north (USDA Hardiness Zone 6?). So many of us tend to think in terms of waiting until we can buy our place with a few acres in the country, or at least on the fringe of the suburbs. Instead, you show many great ideas for doing what we can, where we are, with a small budget.
After all - used tools can be found on Craigslist or at yard sales. As can wood for raised beds, and as you point out, many materials for mulch and compost. Your videos are also enjoyable to watch. Thank you! -
Good vid im going completely green when i get my new place with solar panels and 3 gardens next to a lake Now Thats Paradise

Brand new to gardening. Thank you so much brother! It helped me a ton.

Fracking water in irrigation now? No thanks.

Do you harvest enough food to make it worth that expense? I think I spend more on dirt than what I save if I bought my own veggies. I don't own my land so I have to do a container garden. www.JesusReallyDoesLoveYou.com

I never have near enough compost.

I used to have many ladybugs and no aphids, then the ladybugs stopped coming and the aphids increased. But no ladybugs came to eat them last year.

ive seen a quick shot of raspberrys in your videos but havnt seen you talk about them, did I miss a video? Im starting mine this year and curious your take?

just noticed this video was published on my birthday. I like you approach to low cost gardening and am inspired to grow some food in the small plots of soil in front of my apartment(hopefully I can bribe the neighbors with some food to grease the wheels lol )

I want a mixture of aquaponics and raised beds also chickens are a very good adition to the garden.

Good Vid, good honest , no frills presentation style . I would agree with pretty much every thing you said . my one gripe would be about that expensive looking "lumber" as I believe you Americans call it , that went into the raised beds . I have used all kinds of second hand stuff I got for free . maybe it didn't look as neat as yours though

This year I have spent the least of any year in the garden, (after having a baby) And may also be one of the most successful, strangely enough, even with the lack of attention I have paid it. Any with the masses unusual rainfalls here, not water bill either! Should have kept track.

This resonates with us....Such a pleasant video..I like the music also. Have you seen Back to Eden Gardening? I have and have given so many away. We are heading in the direction of your held dear ideals. They are ours also. Thank you for your hard work to get this information to us. Shalom and God Bless.

Great tutorial. I believe that you should grow at a low cost. If I'm going to eat a tomato it shouldn't cost me more than the store. I'm very lucky.I don't know if it's because of my disability but families and friends are always giving me things for my garden so I give them some of what I harvest. I hope in a couple years I can be as good as you. but I have to keep learning. Thanks for teaching us. Lots f blessings

I couldn't really decide what video to relate this question to so I chose this one.
How do you decide where to plant what within your garden? I've done a sun survey as well as viewed a website that show a google maps view of the suns path so that I can see it from that perspective. However I'm still very nervous about what goes where. I suppose I should have a chart listing plant heights and sun requirements for all plants I want to put in and maybe that will give me all the clarity I need, but I figure some actual discussion would be beneficial.
While I have 1500 sq ft of main garden with lots of sun, one half gets it a bit sooner than the other half, and another strip about 5ft by 50ft of nearly all sun all day I still plan to do dense planting in all those areas.
I want to plant a bit of just about everything I can find. I'm hoping to have a huge harvest and possibly sell some out of the yard.
So when I say everything I'm talking tomato, strawberry, zucchini, cucumber, beans, corn, peppers, herbs, pumpkins, gourds, lettuces, cabbages, onions. As well as flowers interplanted.
