SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Zoellick, U.S. Trade Representative: "The Taiwanese officials are well aware, this is a decision that has to be made unanimously by all the WTO countries and therefore I think the practical and likely approach would be that China and Taiwan come in together in the same session and the United States has been working to that end. And I have mentioned that I have long felt that this is important because as Taiwan moves into a different generation that is justifiably proud of its democracy and its economic achievements that it wants to feel more fully integrated with the international economic system. I believe many of these things can be done with the changing private networks. " 18. Shi and Lin shake hands 19. Various of meeting between Taiwan and China STORYLINE: Top U.S. and Chinese trade officials reported no progress in talks on Tuesday on Beijing's effort to join the World Trade Organization, but China said they would meet again this week. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick and Chinese Trade Minister Shi Guangsheng met for an hour during a conference of trade officials of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. The United States has endorsed China for membership in the WTO, but the two sides disagree over agricultural subsidies and other issues. China's entry has been delayed by its insistence on being allowed to subsidize up to 10 percent of its farm output. Washington and other governments want the rate set at the 5 percent limit for developed economies. A compromise worked out in Shanghai would have set the stage for renewed multilateral WTO talks due to take place in Geneva. Sino-US relations have wavered in the face of the April spy-plane incident which saw a Chinese pilot killed after it collided with an American EP-3 reconnaissance aircraft over Chinese waters. Zoellick acknowledged that China's entry into the WTO remain a contentious issue. Another controversial issue come after Zoellick's suggestion that Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian attend the APEC leaders' summit in Shanghai in October. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and has already rejected Chen's request to travel to the mainland You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/1c0865e9b1758d6868e38407b77f5a6f Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork
