Thompson's Prawn Farm
The programs NC Cooperative Extension offers today look a little bit different than they did in 1914 but the mission has never changed. Our clients tell our stories best. They are the ones whose lives are changed through their experiences with Cooperative Extension. We want to share some examples of how Cooperative Extension is changing lives and moving North Carolina forward today. Joe Thompson is a former tobacco farmer who turned to aquaculture after three hip replacement surgeries forced him to rely on a less demanding form of farming. Mike Lanier, the Orange County Area agent for Agribusiness helped Thompson extend and change from the traditional agriculture into a new market for prawn farming. Thompson is committed to raising the freshwater crustaceans on his three pond operation and is still working with Lanier to gain the greatest market of his produce.
