This is Rammed Earth! How to build with Rammed Earth technology. DIY!
What is Rammed Earth? That's what everyone asked me when I told them I was traveling out to the desert to attend a Rammed Earth workshop. Honestly it was hard to explain. All I could say is that it's an old style of construction that makes houses or other structures using dirt. And obviously it isn't very popular on the east coast of the United States where I currently live. So that got me thinking; maybe I should make a video about Rammed Earth so that anyone who is interested would have a better idea of what it is. So here you have it, a brief overview of what Rammed Earth construction is all about. A special thanks to instructor Quentin Branch and his wife Julie for welcoming the other attendees and myself into their wonderful home. Also a shout out to the other guys that came from all over the U.S and Mexico to learn with me. They are Brent Cogswell, Angel Noe Jimenez, David Wertz, and Blaine Nez. Rammit Yourself is a hands-on workshop offered by Quentin Branch in Oracle, Arizona. Mr. Branch has been referred to as "the best resource in the country for this construction type." It is an ancient building method that has seen a revival in recent years as people seek more sustainable building materials and natural building methods. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rammed_earth

when the steel form ties are ground off of the walls, what happens to the hole? is the steel left in the wall or is it pulled through?

How do you know the right amount of water to use? the final mixture looked so dry that I'm surprised that in the next day is so solid. Great work. Cheers

I went to one of Quentin's courses this year. Great people, amazing learning experience. I plan on incorporating rammed earth into my home when I design it in the next year or two. Also met Blaine there, great guy, hard worker. He originally was a student but with our class he was there to help with what he had learned from previous classes.
