The shrimp industry is the second largest export industry in Bangladesh supporting the livelihoods of 600,000. Assistance is needed for improvement in the inspection system, conditions of employment and effective quality assurance as well as proper skills development of actors along the shrimp’s value chain. This will be achieved through: strengthened integrity of production management systems so as to improve food safety conditions and maintain access to markets for fishery products; harmonization of the regulatory framework for controls in the supply chain (including veterinary medicines); strengthening of the control reach of the competent authority throughout the supply chain; increased reliability and validity of sampling for official controls; support initiatives to simplify the supply chain to ease uptake of internal control mechanisms; and introduction of internal control systems throughout the supply chain (including environmental management).
