The Secrets of Growing Giant Vegetables
For Beyond 50's "Gardening" talks, watch a video interview with Roland Evans of Bountea. He is part of a long line of family gardeners from Ireland, going back to the 1890s. His brother John is famous for earning 9 Guinness Book of World Records for growing the largest vegetables. According to Roland, the secret is in the soil. He will talk about how to prepare your plantings from seeds for growing them organic and very big through revitalizing the soil using a compost tea of lots of micro-organisms. I agree with everything except using pots for early germination...I strongly suggest you check out Soil Blocker. Commercially manufactured ones are expensive for the average home gardener but there are several videos on Y/T on how to easily make your own and use one!!! Please keep sharing your knowledge and God Bless. lsaphx1976@gmail.com

Yes, the right seed, soil and in Alaska has about 22 hours of daylight... which is probably the real secret! He doesn't mention that part. Minerals doesn't play much into it.... plants can't use raw minerals... so thats a lie. After its broken down and a plant does use it... then composting it will provide minerals for the next plant.

Is it good to fertilize with coffee grounds?

Researching where your plant grew in the wild is a good idea. Celery, for instance, originally grew in a bog - so never, ever let celery get dry and don't water it from overhead.

man I was thinking on going off the grid and just growing tons of fruits, vegetables and spices. what a life that would be. watermelon, dragon fruit, cantaloupe, honey dew, gords, mangos, carrots, cucumbers, pomegranate, I'll harvest honey, lettuce, kale, spinach. I would have a bountiful garden. one day...
