The grain dryer at the Black Velvet Distillery is 33 years old and will be replaced in June 2007. We use it to dry the spent grain or corn residue that is left over when we have removed the starch. The resulting product is called distillers dried grain (DDG). Here is a brief clip of the old grain dryer in operation. Note the flame used to dry the grain. This flame uses 15% of our daily natural gas requirements.
