We were going on a work trip to Embu. To get to Embu we passed through a small town called Mwea. Mwea has an irrigation system that enables farmers in the area to grow rice. In some areas, these rice paddies stretch as far as the eye can see. What fascinated me the most was how cool and refreshing the weather was in Mwea compared to the dry heat we left in Nairobi. That and the contrast of our green surroundings to the brown dustiness of Makutano. As I understand it, Mwea lies on the south-east slopes of Mount Kenya, hence the cooler weather. And of course, rice is cheaper in Mwea.
