Also, farmed salmon is very high levels of toxins such as carcinogenic dioxins and PCBs. Support sustainable wild salmon fisheries!

Marine Harvest Canada fish harvested in 2007 received an average of 50 grams of antibiotic per metric ton. If you equate that to what a 5.0 kg fish would have received, it’s the weight of a standard tablet of Ibuprofen, or 0.255 grams per 5.0 kilogram fish.

Hi Craigvr, all farmers in BC have maximum density limits based on years of understanding what is best for the fish (oxygen availability and reducing stress). Pens are typically 97% water and 3% fish. Maximum final densities will be no greater than 15kg per cubic metre. In other words, 3 market size fish per cubic metre, but understanding they may school tighter than this, leaving extra space. The total number of fish allowed on site (biomass) is also science based and strictly regulated.

Hi Waakkeuppp, there is a blog posting about our harvesting procedures on our website at Marine Harvest Canada dotcom. The blog titled "Ethical harvesting practices a priority..." was posted June 26, 2013.

Hi Bammer2001, we do supply to some retailers in Quebec although it's more likely that farms located on Canada's East coast will supply that market (Marine Harvest does not have farms on Canada's East coast). If you'd like to try our salmon, visit any Loblaws chains as they carry our farm-raised Atlantic salmon. We'll look forward to your feedback!

Oh; maybe one day I'll try out some farm-grown salmon. I just don't know if the company sells some of its fish to Quebec. If it doesn't, would they know what salmon farms are there in Quebec? If they do, I would like to know where we could buy a fillet of it and I'll give you a comment about the taste.

Hi Bammer2001, mercury is not a concern in salmon - farmed or wild. That is becuase they are a relatively quick growing fish and don't accumulate much metals over a short period of time. Levels may increase as a fish gets older (called bio-accumulation). Health authorities and experts also recognize the very low levels of mercury in salmon.

When I was doing a science exam in Secondary 4, (I think it was at that level) I learnt that farm-grown salmon have higher concentrations of mercury than wild salmon. Does this exist in your salmon?

Hi 'Asenetic'; we hold back production fish for an extra year until they mature. Nearing maturity, they are moved to freshwater and are fed to appetite throughout the process. There is published research on this subject, but we are unable to link via YouTube.
