The devastating truth behind shrimp farming
In this film and following report, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) reveals the extent of the destruction caused by the shrimp farming industry. Our increased consumption of tropcial shrimp, also called prawns and sometimes scampi, can be traced to coastal regions in the tropic where ecosystem where the ecosystems have been devastated and people are living in miserable conditions, their human rights repeatedly violated. When an increased number of people choose tropical prawns in their curry, on their sushi or in their stir fry, it is causing increased environmental degradation and human suffering in producer countries, like Bangladesh. In his book, Bottomfeeder: How to Eat Ethically in a World of Vanishing Seafood, Taras Grescoe paints a repulsive picture of how shrimp are farmed in one region of India. The shrimp pond preparation begins with urea, superphosphate, and diesel, then progresses to the use of piscicides (fish-killing chemicals like chlorine and rotenone), pesticides and antibiotics (including some that are banned in the U.S.), and ends by treating the shrimp with sodium tripolyphosphate (a suspected neurotoxicant), Borax, and occasionally caustic soda.

I'm doing my research and raising my own shrimp

What kind of humans have we become. I pay the extra couple bucks to buy US Pacific Northwest wild caught, but also have worries about Fukushima. We are all told to worry about global warming, but what about global poisoning.

I urge people not to take things at face value. Shrimp farming has it's issues, especially in Bangladesh, but the major suppliers to the EU (Thailand, Vietnam, etc) are actually far more ecologically/environmentally successful. Bangladesh is a low lying country with a large river delta; the spread of salinity is not just the shrimp farmer's fault (though, yes, they are one part in this). Polderisation affects salinity too, as does rising sea levels, climate change, etc. In some areas nearer the sea, you cannot grow vegetables anyway. Also, many of the shrimp from Bangladesh are from the traditional farmers that also farm vegetables, grow fish and rice, etc. This video is worryingly manipulative and a boycott on shrimp - a huge industry for Bangladesh - is not the way forward and would probably do more harm than good. Also, if you think that eating non-organic produce such as veg or meat or milk isn't full/covered with chemicals, (even if they're not banned, they're still not good for you!) then you're very wrong. See how many of your hygiene products have parabens, if your deodorant has aluminium, what is in your toothpaste, how much aspartame is in your diet coke... If you want to support the poor shrimp farmers, buy organic. For example, go to seatglobal and read about the Loni's account of the Bangladeshi shrimp (under the library heading) and get a better understanding of this industry before you make your opinion.

I heard about shrimp farming a few years back, since then I have not eaten any shrimp, this is fucking disgusting. Aside from how they are ruining people, its disgusting food, that shit is gross as fuck! All those chemical filled muddy ass shrimp being caught the second they are big enough for consumption.

its there goverment....who are the culprit

Very sad and alarming. I, personally, eat only local prawns from British Columbia, but I know that most people don't care about the hidden story behind what they choose to eat. Same thing for chocolate, coffee, farmed salmons, bananas, etc. Be aware of the consequences of your actions! Stop living in a Walt Disney story, people! We contribute every day to the fate of Humanity and we are doing a terrible, terrible job.

Thank god, I eat none of this anyways. like i always said
"Insects are the farm of the future" - ose -
Sounds good but the Swedes should look at what Ikea and H&M does in Bangladesh and other countries in the world so Sweden and the rest of Europe can buy cheap goods.
Why is DDT that has been outlawed in Europe for 40 years still being sold in many countries in Asia and Africa? Does ShellTox ring a bell?
Start by cleaning up the dirt in Sweden first. A good place to start would be the under paid Romanian workers at Volvo Trucks. 2 USD an hour cant be a fair salary when Swedish workers get 25 USD. -
Yes I do Eat shrimp but before I buy any shrimp I always ask Where do those shrimp come from I only buy wild prawns that's sustainable from Australia they are the best Never buy any shrimp from Bangladesh or Thailand...cheers
