Thailand's dog meat trade with Vietnam has been operating for decades. It's estimated that more than half a million dogs were smuggled and butchered during 2011. Although dog meat consumption is legal in Vietnam, Thailand has laws against the meat and skin trades. Thai authorities and local police have been cracking down in the last year, but the lucrative trade is still continuing. Corruption is endemic and officials and border police are often bribed. Whilst some people think it helps to control the large number of strays, most of the dogs caught are pets; they are usually healthier and fetch a higher price. Pet dogs in Thailand often live outside houses, making them easy to catch. Find out what you can do to help - soidog.org/en/dogmeat/
