Thailand's Dog Meat Trade
Thailand's dog meat trade with Vietnam has been operating for decades. It's estimated that more than half a million dogs were smuggled and butchered during 2011. Although dog meat consumption is legal in Vietnam, Thailand has laws against the meat and skin trades. Thai authorities and local police have been cracking down in the last year, but the lucrative trade is still continuing. Corruption is endemic and officials and border police are often bribed. Whilst some people think it helps to control the large number of strays, most of the dogs caught are pets; they are usually healthier and fetch a higher price. It's not the senseless killing, its the senseless cruelty of many in Asia who think that animals lives are secondary. People who make excuses for these people are said. In Western culture we need meat, it is dealt with in a fast and humane fashion on the whole and yes their are rouges who are cruel. The whole shocking process for these animals is a hell from start to finish and yes these intelligent animals are companions not food so please those on the left please stop making excuses for these people. There is many a problem in Asia with a sincere lack of animal husbandry going on here and they could learn much from the civilised west.
