Join us as we follow David Carthel's crop on drip irrigation throughout the 2011 growing season... This is part one of a three part series. Making the switch to drip irrigation can be a tough management decision for some producers, but for David Carthel, a corn producer in Parmer County, the investment was well worth it. He worked with his local USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service office to determine how to best incorporate conservation practices throughout his operation. Carthel is using his drip system to strategically water his corn crop in three stages to compensate for Mother Nature's limited resources this growing season. Drip irrigation is one of several water conservation methods available for agricultural producers today. Drip irrigation allows producers to apply moisture directly to plants' root zones underground, greatly reducing loss to evaporation and runoff. This is just one of the many ways producers are working to conserve our precious water resources, while achieving yields that will help feed a growing world population.
