And on the subject of tainted milk, a resident living on a dairy farm in Hebei Province tells us that the contamination of milk may be happening at the farm, not just the factory. Mr. Ren is a farmer in Hebei Province. He didn't want us to use his first name. Ren says he's witnessed dairy farmers adding something to milk call "essence of protein." It's a cocktail of urea, sugar, starch and melamine mixed together. [Mr. Ren, Resident Mengniu Dairy Farm]: "We live very close to the milking hall. They just pile up the raw materials inside the hall. If they want to make more money, they will add some more chemicals. Maybe the factory will add their stuff as well. Normally milk farmers only add urea, sugar, and starch. But they are more cunning now, as they also add melamine." Mr. Ren witnessed this taking place on a farm contracted to supply fresh milk to Mengniu Dairy Company, one of China's biggest milk producers. Adding "essence of protein" can fool testing mechanisms that look for protein content in milk as a measure of its quality. "Essence of protein" can fool tests, but it's dangerous to for the consumer. Mr. Ren believes the problem is so widespread that the Chinese Communist Party is to blame. [Mr. Ren, Resident Mengniu Dairy Farm]: "Who is responsible for such a tragedy? The Chinese Communist Party should take the full responsibility. Contamination of 22 milk products relates to the whole milk industry in China." Hebei Province is China's largest dairy regions, with close to two-and-a-quarter million cows. People are losing confidence in the quality of fresh milk—and that could mean tough times ahead for farmers. Many are already selling their herds or killing their cows.
