Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse "Gallopin' Gertie"
Watch the amazing "Gallopin' Gertie" November 7, 1940 film clip. 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge Slender, elegant and graceful, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stretched like a steel ribbon across Puget Sound in 1940. The third longest suspension span in the world opened on July 1st. Only four months later, the great span's short life ended in disaster. "Galloping Gertie," collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940. The bridge became famous as "the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history." Now, it's also "one of the world's largest man-made reefs." The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers. A dramatic tale of failure and success The story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga. When Galloping Gertie splashed into Puget Sound, it created ripple effects across the nation and around the world. The event changed forever how engineers design suspension bridges. Gertie's failure led to the safer suspension spans we use today.

If I was on a bridge that started to sway in the wind... I wouldn't think I'll just hop the fuck out I don't have time for that. sorry (insert dog's name)
-
I live right next to where this used to stand lol
-
RIP Tubby

Learning about this in Dynamics. The bridge's natural frequency was matched by the wind I think it was like 40mph, the amplitude of the wave gets bigger until failure of the system.
-
who was recording while this bridge was in wobble mode?
-
Everyone is so chill about it
-
Who else came here from Science Pace 1117? XD
-
Lets hope That dude in That car survived

The music is called To Induce Calm by Alexandre Gomez. Not very suitable but great nonetheless.

If you look carefully at the sides of the bridge they are solid and reflected the wind blowing on them, causing the oscillations. After this the side walls were criss crossed with girders and allowed wind to blow across the deck.

Holy shit man
-
I wonder if the insurance company paid out claim to the car lost on the bridge
-
just resonance?
-
That was quite the bridge
-
Don't you just hate it when your car gets stuck in a rubber bridge?
-
people back then recorded with a potato
-
I think the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was the most elegant bridge to ever exist.
