Sustainable Pearl Farming PRESENTER: Saleem Ali, Gund Fellow | Director of the Institute for Environmental Diplomacy and Security | Professor of Environmental Studies| 2/10/2012 Pearl farming has the potential to offer unique opportunities in terms of livelihoods and marine conservation in the Pacific region. This tea presents a research project that will examine how the black cultured pearl supply chain and consumers could further support these positive environmental and socio-economic benefits and promote responsible pearl farming. The work is in collaboration with pearl farmers and other partners in Switzerland, Japan, the US and the Pacific region. This website (http://www.sustainablepearls.org/pearls/pearl-types/black-cultured-pearls/) aims to inform about different pearl types, ecological and socio-economic dimensions of pearl farming and to share resources and findings on these themes. This event is part of the weekly Gund Tea Series, an opportunity for affiliates of the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics and the broader University community to engage in robust discussion about topical research, current events, and relevant theory. The Teas host visiting scholars and research associates from around the world, as well as some of the Gund's very own fellows & students.
