Subsidized Corn Destroying Global Bio-Diversity
James Boyce Pt.3: Industrial agriculture threatening existence of small farmers growing corn in Mexico and Guatemala; potatoes in Peru and the Andes; rice in Bangladesh and Southeast Asia - farmers who maintain the reservoir for adaptation of crops to new insects, new pests, and climate change

It does not take a fool to understand that eliminating every growing thing in a large area, except for the corn plant, decreases and/or destroys bio-diversity. We will destroy the bio-diversity that allows us to grow any food at all if we keep on this stupid trip of killing all of the small farmer's, and supporting all of the mega farmers. The health of our planet depends upon us making sense out of this problem.

top-down state-controlled anti-market regulation / legislation hurts us all but this one is more clear than most
-
I welcome ideas that uplift and reject the cornwholly-o's

That's where we need to help, help in the recovery of the land after. We gotta win the farmer over with a good deal, same as the deal they got before or better. I actually think that it's very do-able too, I think heirloom seed breeders, conventional non-patent seed breeders would support the idea. I think finding them new buyers for their new traditional and organic product is feasible. The Clean Seed Bank ..The Organic Transition Fund..Greener Nation, Organic America Fund!!
-
But in a kind way. None of this shaming growers, we need to put our money where our mouths are, if we really expect these guys to give up the deals they have made; both with the seed reps and the buyers they set up to purchase the crop. Some of these farmers sign contracts that span over years, and are required to keep it up till the contract is over, whether they like it anymore or not.
-
We ( starting with me) need to subsidise farmers who want to transition to organic growing. Provide good seeds..We have to do what they(da big guys) do...make it hard to say no.

1. Due to subsidies. Products with corn syrup as sweetener tend to be the cheapest available with any taste. It's not a "consumer choice" as the companies have a reliable source of purchasers who don't even have the option to buy healthier foods: The poor. 2. Cut subsidies extensively, use regulations and taxes to incentivise healthier and more sustainable farming practices (corn isn't.) 3. Most of our problems are caused by it (YT character limit prblms.) 4. Higher wages = less % spent on food.
-
1. Yellow Corn #2 is among the least expensive calories available. Makes about the cheapest animal feed around. Corn syrup's not particularly healthy, but that's a consumer choice. 2. Eating beyond our means? Maybe, but what's the alternative? Letting humans starve? A one-child policy? Banning meat consumption? BTW, much of the world is far behind their crop yield potential (ie. Africa is estimated at about 15%). 3.4. These answers aren't specific enough to merit a response.

The man means well, and it sucks that the some people will have to change jobs. But, we need to move forward, and GMO's are going to be an important part of that progress.

1. Corn subsidies are largely a result of subsidies. Corn is inherently a poor crop, low in nutritious value, destroys the land it comes from, and the vast majority of it isn't even edible. 2. I honestly would say so, yes. We're eating beyond our means, putting millions of potential jobs out of place, destroying out environment, and putting ourselves at massive risk with such huge farms. A mixed bag would probably be better, though. 3. Causes huge problems 4. As would giving them a square deal.
-
They have no idea.
-
I was just pointing out an inconsistency in the coverage, not expressing any opinions. 1. Acreage dedicated to corn is largely a product of market demand. Admittedly subsidizing corn does artificially increase demand. 2. Is this necessarily the case? Higher barriers to entry aren't good, but capitalizing on economies of scale increases productivity. 3. Sure. What's your point? 4. And enabling 7 billion people to eat for cheaper than they would otherwise be able to.
-
It's those evil businesses in both cases, that's the important thing TRN is trying to tell everyone.
-
So not long ago TRN was griping about expensive corn screwing over poor people, and now they're griping about cheap corn screwing over poor people? Which is it?
-
And Control the Human Population by default. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are FIRMLY SET behind this diabolical plan. Yet there's something so refreshingly honesty and beautiful about mass human genocide. The most important thing is that LIFE survives and thrives on this planet, with or without humans.

You must face the fact that no one cares, should all of Egypt starve to death. A few Palestinians in Gaza may be inconvenienced.
-
The people of Egypt are having trouble paying for thier food.
-
The professor hit in the nail it is all about Monsanto's plan to privatize the food supply
-
Yaaay-ish! So the real news finally figured out subsidies aren't good. Well no, only certain subsidies.
-
So .. the meek (the small rural third world farmers) really will inherit the earth!
