Stressed Plants Are Higher in Antioxidants!
You might think that crops grown in a pest free garden with ample water and nutrients, perfect weather, and no environmental stress would be richer in antioxidants, but this is not the case. While these conditions might produce beautiful looking plants, they’d likely be lower in antioxidants than crops grown in a less ideal setting. One Yard Revolution is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. So for example, when ants are doing a good job farming aphids that are feeding on a plant, and people get upset and kill the ants and aphids, in turn these reduced plant stresses causes the plant to produce less antioxidants.
Great videos by the way. As far as I know, you guys are the only ones on the planet presenting hard facts that go against the current up stream against all these assumptions that are common place and have a pricey negative and inefficient impact on the planet and all organisms. -
he is forgetting one thing to his garden too bad he hasnt figured it out....

Fascinating! I never knew antioxidants played an important role for the plants themselves. You've got quite the knowledge base, Patrick. I'm thinking you must do a lot of research in areas of gardening techniques, plant health, and small scale sustainable food production. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences.

Really great vid. Lots to think about here thank you!

I like to use less nitrogen and prefer to look after a good development of root structure ... Is there any link between antioxidants and root development (size) or root health? ...

Love the mix of scientific research & hands on advice.

Excellent video; look forward to your next video...We look out over our garden and now think "taking care of the world one yard at a time" :-D

The only plants I pamper are my Fuchsia's (during winter so they survive) I love the berries ;) I have been reading an article about GMO makers who are working on a gene to add to plants to produce antioxidants and also a gene to add to plants so the plants can send out signals when attacked by bugs so the good bugs will come to help the plants and breeders will use less chemicals. I thought nature was perfect but no, plants seem to need human interferance to be healthy ... in English: "We can sell anything to the clueless people and they will buy it" What planet am I on, Absurdistan? Why would they need to add genes to plants to do something the plant does by nature?

Thanks for the info Patrick.

BRAVO Patrick!!! Every thing in this video is perfect, well done my friend and sorry to be so late, Christmas preparations are driving me crazy lately, my mail box is literally exploding with videos from my friends I have to watch!!! Wishing you and Karen all the best!

Thats good information. I use garlic barrier mix before the aphids arrive. I did a video on it. Spiders and lady birds are better.
Thanks for sharing -
Thank you Patrick.

Hey there! My favorite pest control are spiders. :) But they do not discriminate. :(

Yet again, another amazing and informative video! Thanks.

can I please get the tab to your acoustic guitar piece. or make a video of you playing that would be nice

Squash bugs and squash vine borers are a huge problem in my area. I have tried many things including soapy water spray, D.E., traps, companion planting etc. and nothing works. I will be using special garden nets to help deal with them this upcoming year. If you have any ideas, that would be great. Now the soapy water spray does work as far as killing them on contact, but I hate having to go out and check under every single pumpkin, squash etc. leaf for those eggs. That is way too time consuming and it takes away the joys of gardening.

Makes sense I guess. I'd just never thought about it. Thank Patrick - great reminder mate. -
This same principal may be true for humans as well. Just saying. Excellent information and food for thought for next year's garden.

It doesn't surprise me about the increase in antioxidants. I know shaded tomatoes have less antioxidants because there is less stress from the sun. I take a hands off approach to pests and although things cop a punishing at times, they bounce back and generally recover. I love watching the affects of non intervention and regularly have a giggle at how perfect nature is. I'm glad there's someone else out there not freaked out by aphids.

Great information and advice. I lived with the white fly till the ladybugs arrived.;-)
