From 2013-14, the use of solar powered pumps for irrigation in India trebled. For farmers in Eastern India with little power but abundant groundwater, solar pumping could bring great benefits. But in western and southern India where groundwater is already over-exploited, access to cheap reliable power may deplete aquifers further. IWMI’s Tushaar Shah believes that the solution is to turn solar energy into a new source of cash for farmers in water scarce areas.
