"About this Video" Soil Preparation & Sowing CBSE Class VIII Science Student Project What is Soil? Soil is a substance in which there is moisture and nutrients for plants and animals to live in and grow. Soil may be defined as the upper thin layer of earth's crust, which serves as a natural medium for the growth of plants. Role of soil in cultivation of crops are: 1. Soil performs the following functions in the cultivation of crops. 2. The soil serves as a reservoir of different nutrients required for the growth of plants. 3. The soil provides water to the plants. 4. The soil provides oxygen to the roots of the plants through aeration. 5. The soil provides mechanical anchorage. 6. The soil provides organic matter called humus to the plants, which helps in their growth. 7. The soil also contains microorganisms, which protect plants. Agricultural Practices 1. Preparation of soil Ploughing/Tilling Levelling Manuring 2. Sowing 3. Addition of manure/fertilizer 4. Irrigation 5. Weeding 6. Crop protection 7. Harvesting 8. Threshing 9. Winnowing 10.Storage Preparation of soil Preparation of soil is the first step in cultivating crop for food production. The soil is prepared for sowing the seeds of the crop, by ploughing, levelling and manuring. Let us now discuss these steps in detail. Ploughing The process of loosening and upturning the soil is called ploughing. Ploughing helps in the following ways: 1. Ploughing breaks the large lumps of clay into smaller particles. 2. Roots of plants can penetrate the loose soil easily. 3. It leads to aeration of the soil. 4. Ploughing uproots the unwanted plants already growing in the field. 5. Ploughing facilitates uniform mixing of fertilizers with soil. Implements used in ploughing Function of implements - Pulverising, uprooting and stubbles. The ploughed soil is then levelled to ensure uniform irrigation. Levelling also prevents loss of fertile top layer of soil with wind or washed away with water. This loss of top layer of soil by wind or water is called soil erosion. Thus, levelling prevents soil erosion. Implements used in levelling Function of implements - Making soil surface even for uniform irrigation. Manuring Finally, manure or chemical fertilizers are added to the soil so that it can supply all the nutrients to the plants required for their growth. Before adding the fertilizer, the soil must be analysed to find out which nutrient it is lacking. Function of implements -- Making the soil spongy, airy and fertile Sowing Sowing is the process of planting seeds into the ploughed, levelled and manured field. Types of Sowing • Broadcasting The process of casting handfuls of seed over prepared ground is called broadcasting. By Seed Drill In agriculture, most seed is now sown using a seed drill, which offers greater precision and seed is sown evenly and at the desired rate. The drill also places the seed at a measured distance below the soil, so that less seed is required. Function of implements Putting seeds into the soil The Better Method Sowing with seed drill is a better method because in this way seeds are sown at proper depth and distance. The After Tasks Preparation of soil and sowing are followed by the addition of manures or fertilizers. The next task is irrigation which is followed by weeding and then crop protection. After the process of crop protection, the crop is harvested and then threshed. Then the process of winnowing takes place followed by the storage of grains in dry conditions. This is how we get a good yield of crops.
