Snigdha Manchanda: India's cup of tea
http://inktalks.com In spite of being one of the largest producer and consumer of tea, India is far behind in education, awareness and appreciation of the fine varieties of tea it produces. Tea sommelier Snigdha Manchanda shares with us her journey with tea, and articulates the paradox perfectly, saying ",India without a tea school is like France without a wine school." ABOUT INK: INKtalks are personal narratives that get straight to the heart of issues in 18 minutes or less. We are committed to capturing and sharing breakthrough ideas, inspiring stories and surprising perspectives--for free! Watch an INKtalk and meet the people who are designing the future--now. http://INKtalks.com ABOUT SNIGDHA MANCHANDA: Having grown up collecting exotic teas from around the world in her father's old trunk, Snigdha went on to train as a Tea Taster in Sri Lanka. Under the tutelage of Tea Master Nao Kumekawa from Japan, Snigdha specialised in crafting hand-blended teas, and finally set up her own line named after her childhood treasure chest -- Tea Trunk. Snigdha works closely with a number of tea estates across India to promote quality Indian teas -- to her, India without tea is like France without wine. She next plans to launch a global learning hub for tea in India.

I really don't mean to sound contrarian or anything, because I wish her business all the best, but I knew about all of this stuff and I haven't been to an institute to study tea or become a sommelier. If you have a basic interest in tea drinking, these are general knowledge facts. If she had a trunk of 100 different teas, it's hard to believe she didn't know that all tea came from the same plant, the difference between green and black is oxidation, CTC is cheaper than full-leaf so it's more widely-consumed, etc. Good on her for hosting the workshops to spread awareness and appreciation, though.
