Drought is lingering in Southeast Asia and farmers are struggling in Thailand as reduced water for irrigation has hurt agriculture, particularly rice cultivation. With less rain expected this year because of the El Nino effect, the government has implemented drought mitigation measures. They have called on farmers to stop irrigating paddy fields to save underground water, and encouraged them to grow other plants such as potatoes, mushrooms and corns that use less water.
