Great movie, though I will probably never understand why Mifune is wearing what's essentially a man bikini with armor covering the upper body.

As much as I agree with your take on modern action, I genuinely think Zack Snyder's directing is criminally underrated in terms of action. He manipulates digital images in an almost avant garde way. His style is his substance. Film is a visual medium, and I think people get too caught up on more literary elements.

Don't turn up the volume. Don't fucking do it.

Well, comic book movies are just that. It's a comic turned into a movie. Like in the comics, it's a bunch of frames with the hero destroying stuff. It's bad cinematography from the beginning.
-
Yeah but that was good cos it was made by Kurosawa. Modern films are made by committee and a generation born in the late 70s who dont give a fuck about truth.
-
You forgot about the most important element of the movie: Toshiro Mifune's ass. They don't make them like this anymore

Totally with you on the point. However most of the clips you picked were from action movies that were also blockbusters, and I think that gives them their own unique intensity. It would be interesting to see a side-by-side using less... flamboyant.. modern action movies.

For a long time I've wondered why I didn't care at all about the caracters in the action scenes of many modern action movies. Here I get a good explanation. Thank you.

Beautiful Auditory Essay.
I have been trying to pin point the problem(s) with action movies these days, thank ya for providing me with clarity -
Great video!
Something struck me towards the end, about how the film makes you see the effects of the heroes violence. Seven Samurai was released less then nine years after World War 2, Japan had embraced violence and suffered because of it. Modern America, which hasn't really gone through anything like that, makes movies where violence by the heroes rarely has any negative consequences.
I wonder (as someone with little knowledge of film) if there's a wider trend of filmmakers who have been the loosing end of war being more . . . unenthusiastic(?) about violence compared to filmmakers who's nations are safer/recently militarily successful. -

A very good study of a master filmmaker with poignant observation on the current status of studio action movie fare.

Pioneer movie! One of my favorites. I wish they make a video game for the movie that captures the movie in action and build on the movie basics and true to the movie. I love everything about this movie!
