Rice is special to the Japanese. Since rice cultivation arrived here millennia ago, it has molded Japanese society, the landscape and religious beliefs. That history is reflected in archaeological sites and other remains across the country and in everyday lifestyles today. This is a journey to aspects of the Japanese mind that have been nurtured by rice farming. We also meet people who still dedicate their efforts to this beloved crop today. A Sacred Paddy Field The rice dedicated to the gods at the Ise Shrine is grown in a special sacred paddy field. The Red Rice God from over the Sea The island of Tsushima in Nagasaki Prefecture is regarded as one of the routes for the transmission of rice to Japan. Fishermen there still practice a remarkable rite in which the red rice is worshiped as a god.
