Scenes around Kumamoto
A quick drive on the east slopes of Mount Aso looking over the valley at tea farms, rice terraces and the Rakuno Milk Farm. Kumamoto, Japan in August.

I grew up watching rice planted by hand, which I've never done, of course, but would all the more appreciate the rice, because they worked bent over like that in the heat every year. I don't think our rice even came from those farms! I saw a BBC report recently of the dwindling terrace farms; a teaching couple rented their paddy and would escape Tokyo to farm for stress relief. mezurashii deshou! The wistfulness of old-school farmers, as with any disappearing lifestyle, was so sad, touching.
