Milk farmers in China's Hebei province have to dump their milk and face bankruptcy as public confidence in the country's milk product plummeted after food safety scandal. At the Yangjiazhai Milk Farm in Yuanshi county of Hebei province milk produced by some 200 milk cows for three days were disposed of, after the owner was arrested in the milk safety scandal. "No one wants to buy our milk now. The Sanlu Dairy Company has already stopped its production and it is under investigation now, and nobody buys our milk. Even the kids in the village dare not to drink milk at their breakfast," said a worker there. Hu Shumin, the farm's owner, was involved in the case of adding melamine into the milk destined for the Sanlu Dairy Group, which lead to 3 deaths and 6200 babies falling ill. In recent days tests by government inspectors found melamine in powdered and liquid milk samples from 22 dairy companies - prompting the recalls. Melamine is a chemical used in making plastics and is high in nitrogen. When added to milk, tests register the melamine's nitrogen as protein. Though health experts believe ingesting minute amounts poses no danger, melamine can cause kidney stones, which can lead to kidney failure. Infants are particularly vulnerable.
