A promo video of a newly setup racehorse rescue project in Japan. Here we have 2 types of horse racing in Japan - one is the English type using Thoroughbreds and the other uses draft horses, making them race over obstacle hills pulling heavy sleighs. In Thoroughbred racing, average 8000 to 9000 foals are 'produced' every year and only 1 percent of them survive, the most of the rest end up in slaughter as horse meat. In draft horse racing, there are less than 1000 horses including breeding mares and their foals, but almost 100 percent of them end up in slaughter too. However, this dark side of the racing reality has been carefully hidden from public by the racing world and there still is a taboo in talking about saving horses after racing- I have met with hostilities and harassment both publicly and privately. Nonetheless, more and more people are becoming aware of what is really going on behind the closed door, and I hope I will be able to save more horses and find them new homes in the future. The draft horse filly that appears in this video is Anne, whose mother I have rescued from an ignorant breeder in 2009, and was born in May 2010. When she was in her mom's womb she had had the same fate with the rest of the race horses, but as she's found her home at my farm she's safe, actually she is most likely the first draft horse filly that was born without doom in my country.
