Small holder farmers in rice production in the northern region have been advised to adopt nursing and transplanting of rice cultivation to avoid over crowding and also increase crop yield on their farms. The Project Manager under Integrated Agricultural Productivity Improvement and Marketing Project, Isaac Kamkam Boadu,said this in an interview during a rice planting demonstration in the West Mamprusi District. The rice planting demonstration exercise is a strategy under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), introduced by the CSIR-SARI with support from its partners. It is aimed at addressing the challenges facing the smallholder rice farmers including low yields, production cost among others. As part of the demonstration exercise, the farmers were taken through the nursing and transplanting method of rice cultivation. The Project Manager under Integrated Agricultural Productivity Improvement and Marketing Project, Isaac Kankam Boadu, said there is the need for farmers to learn new methods of farming. He further explained the benefits of practicing the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). Some rice farmers who participated in the field demonstration said although the process is tedious and time consuming, they were optimistic of getting good yields if they adopted it.
