Return to the mountain top green tea farm 山頂日本緑茶ファームに戻る - Walking in Japan 日本でのウォーキング
Here is the link to the original video "Mountain top green tea farm." http://youtu.be/fsWp2I0AD-Q Here is a link to the second video "Searching for the lost green tea farm." http://youtu.be/4ISyeOsFFmI ---- My name is Kurt Bell and I am delighted that you have taken some time to share a little of the experience of life with me. I'm available on social media at the links below and can be reached via email at dinnerbytheriver@gmail.com Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/softypapa Find me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/LylesBrother On Google+ https://plus.google.com/u/0/109050782163582511388/posts Instagram: http://instagram.com/softypapa LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/kurt-bell/b/416/754 My blog: http://softypapa.wordpress.com ---- THE PATH OF WILDNESS The Path of Wildness is easy to find The course of a stream Leaves blown in the wind A beast's track through the brush And the direction of our first inclination The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone. Heavy indeed. Their two walking sticks side by side at the end there hit me hard. Figuratively, mind you, but it still stung. Geez, I can imagine him walking down that old path, laying the walking stick down there for the last time. Was it a voluntary choice, or did he intend to come back the next day? Not sure which is more saddening. They surely serve a greater monument to his memory and life than any gravestone. At the very least, I hope he and his farm live on in the thoughts and tales of any family he may have. Must have been a great way to live.

Even though the old man's farm is no more, he apparently lived a long life doing what he loved in a beautiful place. What a shame though that this way of life is dying out with this older generation! Good job Kurt!!
-
it's so sad that you couldn't meet the old man again, but you have to think that you were soo lucky for look the master work of that man in it`s best moment and you were abble to show it to your vewers, you know that he was very proud of his work.

Just visited Yujima on Google earth...its just possible to make out the clearings where the Tea fields are. Look NE from the cemetery which is just to the right of the Temple (marked with the swastika). Great film and follow-up Kurt, btw, are the Japanese doing anything to preserve their past at all? (we have the National Trust in the UK)

Great 3-part adventure!! It was awesome to follow you on it. I wonder if you could say that meeting that farmer at the early stages of the softypapa channel influenced your style of adventure in a way...
-
this doesnt mean he is dead :P he prob. just a bit old for this now :)
-
Thanks for sharing, Kurt. As sad as it is that the farm is abandoned, it's important that you were able to share his achievement with the world via your channel in your first video. It's more of a legacy than he would have had otherwise. :)

Oh my goodness, that old man seemed so nice and lovely. :') He seemed so lively for his age, too. RIP you awesome ojiichan.

this is quite sad and i can see you being very upset the farm looked so amazing and he took pride in his work its a shame it had to go :(

You should go to the village and find out what happen up there.

Sad nobody took over when and if he has passed on. He took so much pride in his farm. Did he ever tell you his name? If only you could find out whatever happened to him and his lovely wife.

thx for the update, rather sad you can sorta guess the last days of one mans life as a farmer.lost but not forgotten thanks to you,the odds of someone not native to the country, yet preserving a important part of its own history.you are doing japan a great deed.may only be apreictaed by a few now i think in decades to come.they will look back, and who knows maybe it will inspire some young kids to rebel against the norm, and take up farming once tea becomes insane expensive.thx for sharing.peace

Ah, it's so sad. I stayed with a tea farmer for about a week in Shizuoka. He is a third generation farmer and his son is ready to take over. Sadly, most of the kids move to the cities. I can't imagine I'd face much success if my romantic gaijin self went and tried to start a mountain 手の茶農場. It is certainly a noble livelihood and those farmers should be proud.

Ahh Kurt I must say, sometimes watching your video's I get really sick and dizzy. This is one of those. This may sound a bit crazy, (as I'm not sure myself) but I think I might have been to these places in a past life. Other videos of yours I'm completely fine, but this one once you got up into the mountain I completely lost it. It's like this really sad feeling of nostalgia. I don't even know why. Right now just thinking about it my stomach feels like it's sinking...thank you [=

Heard Kurt, mention the Abe river, so I just followed it upstream to that Y split and where the terrain looked familiar. In hindsight I should have just searched for Yujima, the old man points to it in the original video, should have known it would be close, it wouldn't have been as fun though :)

Kurt, you never disappoint. This was another great video, it did leave me with a sense of melancholia. It is sad to see someones hard work and life seeming to mean so little to most, except you. Thanks for sharing again matey! You make me smile!!!
