Software such as 3DS Max, LightWave, Maya and After Effects renders using the CPU. That is the intended purpose of these nodes.

I'm new to this rendering business so I don't really understand how this is used to render without a gpu. Do these linked machines channel processing power to some external device that houses a 'master' gpu? Also, is this for scientific, engineering or 3D video rendering?

True. What's with the heat handling.

Interesting rack configuration with a back plate enclosing the back of the rack and yet these systems will be generating a lot of heat when under heavy usage from the rear of the units. Ouch!
