He was the richest African-American man in the 1980s. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he grew up in a middle-class neighborhood. He won a football scholarship to Virginia State College, graduating with a degree in economics in 1965. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1968 and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. In 1992, Forbes listed Lewis among the 400 richest Americans, with a net worth estimated at $400 million. He also was the first African American to build a billion dollar company, Beatrice Foods. I read his book and I have mixed opinions about the guy. I respect his hard work, but I did not like him. In his book he talked about several businesses he wanted to buy and despite him being the top bidder on some of those businesses. The white businesses owners still ignored him or turned him down outright. He came off as " I am the top bidder, what's the problem in selling me your business". I don't like that kind of attitude. It kind of reminds me of my rental property business. Some people come to see the unit and they act like just because they have a deposit,I am suppose to rent my unit to them. O no it does not work like that. I can rent to whomever I want to, just like those white business owners can sell to whomever they want to, and just because you are the top bidder does not mean that you are ENTITLED to have the business. Also in his book there were people who were his immediate staff in his law firm who never got paid on time and was paid below average wage. I respect his hard work, but I just didn't like the guy.
