Hernâni Dias and his collective from re:farm the city want to make sure that the world's next generation of urban farmers have the tools to create a 21st Century urban farm. Their open source tools are published on a wiki and they including hardware (the urban farm, the composter, the electronics, the sensors, recycled materials) and software for designing, controlling and monitoring the farm. I admire his energy and enthusiasm but he's going about this in a way that's far too complicated. It's very simple to build a self watering planter that will keep your plants watered for a week even in very hot weather. There are also totally non electronic watering devices that keep the water level in your planters full. There is absolutely no need to incorporate electronics into a deck garden. I have an awesome set of home made planters that also double as compost bins,
